How to Be Open-Minded: 10 Tips to Help You Grow & Explore Life

How to Be Open-Minded: 10 Tips to Help You Grow & Explore Life

INSIDE: If you’re wondering how to be open-minded, you’re already asking the right questions. It’s a path that will lead you on new adventures and a journey of personal growth. Here are some simple steps to take.

Living a curious life with an open mind can lead you to discover new experiences, help you learn new things, and assist you in discovering who you are and what you really want out of life.

As children, we’re always asking questions (so much so that it can even be frustrating to parents at times), but as adults, we tend to stop being so curious about the world. We become set in our ways, we stop asking questions, and we don’t challenge our beliefs.

Most people shy away from change and we end up living a very predictable life that keeps us within our comfort zone. Often, this leads to closed-mindedness.

What Are the Benefits of Being Open-Minded?

It’s important to have some principles and core beliefs, but there are so many benefits to knowing how to be open-minded and being more inquisitive and curious.

It Makes Life an Adventure

Being open-minded is an adventure in itself because it leads us to always question things and to sometimes take the path less traveled.

When we are closed-minded, we shut ourselves off from the adventures of life. Knowing how to be open-minded allows us to take in fresh ideas, try out new things, and breathe new life into our days.

Whether our open-mindedness leads us to the far corners of the Earth or simply gets us to try a new food, it will freshen up our lives with a renewed sense of adventure for sure.

It Serves as a Check Up to Your Beliefs

When we get stuck in our beliefs, it’s like cementing our heals into the sand and putting a wall up to the possibility that any other belief has merit.

And the thing is, life is 100% about perspective. We are all leading different lives in our own reality because we are living according to our beliefs.

Change your beliefs and you change your reality. Just ask anyone who has overcome a chronic or even fatal disease.

If you receive a diagnosis and you accept it, that becomes your reality and then life is rearranged to make that so. But for those who choose not to accept it and keep searching for a way to reverse it, amazing things can happen.

It Gently Pushes You Out of Your Comfort Zone

So many of us are living not-so-comfortably in our comfort zones. We may not be happy with how things are, but we don’t want to rock the boat and risk falling out. So we stay in a zone that at least keeps us in the boat.

But stepping out of our comfort zone is where the magic happens in life. It’s how we grow and become the best versions of ourselves.

It’s too risky for most of us to take a huge leap, but the good thing about knowing how to be open-minded is that it’s like dipping your toe in the water of uncertainty. You don’t have to risk belly flopping when you try the tips below.

It Makes You Learn New Things

As we sit in our comfort zones, we stagnate our ability to learn new things, and there’s something so exhilarating about learning new things.

Being open-minded leaves room for new knowledge, which leads to personal growth, new discoveries as to what you are capable of, and new hobbies to enjoy.

It Keeps You Growing

As we are stepping out of our comfort zone, learning new things, and taking new adventures, we get to grow as people. The more we grow and evolve, the more fulfilling life becomes and the closer we get to the best version of ourselves.

I always say life is all about growth. Just because we stop growing in height doesn’t mean our souls can’t soar forever.

It Makes You a Stronger Person

When you know how to be open-minded, you gain more life experience, you think about things more maturely, and you become a better version of yourself. And all of that means you are becoming a stronger person.

Personal strength is extremely valuable in this life, and it’s something that closed-minded people can’t really obtain.

It Improves Relationships

As we are being more open-minded to other people’s way of thinking, it will certainly lead to more harmony in our relationships. Without giving up what makes you who you are, being less opinionated and more open to other perspectives is a great way to improve any relationship in your life.

How to Be Open-Minded: 10 Tips You Can Try Today

If you want to know how to be open-minded, it starts with making simple changes on a daily basis. That’s how it will become a habit. Try some of these tips today…

When a Belief Crops Up, Challenge It

As we go about our day, beliefs are constantly popping into our heads that then cause us to act in certain ways. One of the best things you can ever do for your personal growth is to challenge those beliefs as they pop up before you act on them.

For example, if you’re talking with your significant other and he mentions something you usually don’t agree with and that would normally spark a fight, stop and mull over his point of view. Maybe ask him to explain his perspective to you.

You don’t have to agree with it, but just be open-minded to another way of thinking and see where it leads you.

Consider a New Route for Your Health & Wellness

If you haven’t already dived into the realm of holistic health, that right there will open your mind to new possibilities.

There are so many modalities, many of which you probably haven’t even heard of before. And while they may not fit into the mainstream perspective on medicine, that doesn’t mean they aren’t getting impressive results for people.

Take Bioenergetics, for example. Rather than starting from the biochemical aspect of the body like traditional medicine does, it works on the foundational bioenergetic level, which is where health issues stem from. From that place, more can be done to resolve and reverse issues since you are dealing with the root cause.

Do One Thing Everyday Differently

It can be really fun to challenge yourself to 30 days of trying new things. Each day, do something different; something you wouldn’t normally do. Keep a record of it, as well as how it felt. You’ll be surprised what can happen in your life if you take a challenge like that.

Take a New Class

Is there something you’ve always wanted to learn, but you’ve never had the guts to do it? For me, it’s things like hip-hop and glass blowing. What is it for you? Now’s the time to act on it!

Or maybe you’ll decide to take a class with a friend that you usually wouldn’t have considered. That can be a great way to open your mind up to something new.

Go to a Place You’ve Never Been

Exploring new places and cultures is certainly something that will teach you how to be open-minded. Even if you just go to China Town in New York or a local neighborhood that is culturally different, it will still require an open mind.

If you have the time and money, consider traveling to exotic places. Maybe check out some yoga retreat destination locations. But to get the feel for what this is like, you can even just visit places you haven’t been to around you, such as new restaurants and stores. Go into it with an open mind and allow in the adventure of it all.

Read Books & Watch Movies About Taking New Adventures

One of the best ways to get inspired to be more open-minded is to read books and watch movies that either take us on adventures or that show the main characters opening their minds.

The movie, Yes Man, is the perfect example of this. Jim Carrey plays a man who decides to say yes to everything, and it takes him on quite an adventure of discovery and personal growth.

Eat Pray Love is a book that was also turned into a movie. It’s the true story of a woman who traveled far away to find herself.

Be a Critical Thinker

Never has it been easier to find the answers to what we are looking for with the internet at our fingertips. The difficult part of it is that you’ll generally find many different perspectives to answer your questions.

This is the heart of knowing how to be open-minded. If you’ve recently gone through an awakening as a result of all the craziness in the world, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Once you open that can of worms, you’ll find a world of information you never even knew existed before.

Research is what critical thinkers use to dive deep into a subject, see it from all the different angels, and formulate their own opinions based on all of that information.

This may sound obvious, but most people don’t do this. Instead, they hear one or two other people’s opinions, which might come from mainstream media or a government agency, and then they adopt that as the truth. That is a closed-minded approach, and unfortunately, it’s the norm.

Be a free thinker. Do your research. Question what doesn’t make sense.

Have Open Discussions

Talking to other people is one of the best ways to be more curious and learn new things. In fact, it’s pretty difficult to ask questions without some kind of dialogue with others. When you’re willing to talk openly to others, you’ll gain new perspectives and hear a range of opinions.

If you wanted to explore your faith, for example, you could take a Christian course, a metaphysical class, and a class on Buddhism with others to facilitate discussion. Then, you can make a more educated decision.

Entering into open discussions gives us the opportunity to gain new perspectives about the things that we’re curious about and perhaps form a more solid idea of your own beliefs in the process.

Look for Opportunities to Learn

Knowing how to be open-minded often means looking for opportunities to learn new things. Sometimes that can mean benefiting from formal education, including going to college or taking an online course.

But it can also mean anything from taking a trip to a museum to reading a book or listening to someone tell you about their experiences. When you look for opportunities to learn, you can continually ask questions, be curious, and be open to changing your perspective.

Be Willing to Really Listen

Anyone who wants to be more curious and ask more questions needs to be willing to listen to the answers they get. That certainly doesn’t mean you have to accept everything you’re told without question (remember, critical thinking is key).

But be willing to listen to what others have to say and consider their point of view. At the very least, that’s an interesting way to go through life, and it might even help you on your personal journey.

Final Thoughts

Learn how to be open-minded by keeping your mind curious, trying new things, and continuing to ask questions even when you feel like you already know a lot about a subject. Life will become a new adventure as you discover a whole world of possibilities you never even knew existed.
