INSIDE: Are your automatic habits running your life? It’s time to make some conscious changes so that you can shift your life towards happiness and well-being.
If you want to live your life as fully as possible and achieve everything you hope to achieve, you need to focus on a few key things in particular. One element to look into is whether you might be accidentally or subconsciously holding yourself back from achieving your goals.
There are many ways this can happen, and one way is by having a lot of automatic habits (i.e. habits that you aren’t consciously engaging in).
When we have automatic habits that we aren’t really paying attention to, it keeps us trapped in our situation and we find ourselves unable to make the changes we want to make.
How to Overcome Your Automatic Habits
There are plenty of things you can do to overcome these habits and start developing new habits that leave a positive mark on your life…
Practice Mindfulness
When we have a habit that we automatically engage in, it is a sure sign that we are lacking in mindfulness at that moment. When we are living mindfully, we are able to see exactly what we are doing and we can be empowered to make better or different decisions at any particular moment in time.
That’s a great way to ensure that we are improving your life one step at a time.
If you want to step out of your habits, it’s a wise move to try and develop more mindfulness in your daily life. This is done through consistent practice and reminding yourself to be present.
Ultimately, you’ll want to have more mindful moments in your general waking life, but it can help to create a regular daily practice of twenty minutes of mindfulness a day. This will begin to train your mind for this type of thinking. Then, over time, you’ll find yourself being more mindful throughout the day.
The more mindful we are, the easier it is for us to replace our automatic habits with healthy habits.
Do Some Soul Searching
Of course, the more aware you are of what your habits are, the more likely it is that you are going to be able to deal with them sensibly and overcome the ones that aren’t serving you. You can do this by doing some soul searching, noticing unhealthy habits when they arise, and writing them down.
You might be surprised at how many there are once you start to delineate them in this fashion. There will likely be bigger ones and smaller ones, but what’s important is that you try to understand why they are occurring.
With deeper understanding comes a more profound ability to be able to free yourself from their clutches.
Draw Up a Plan
Once you know what your main automatic habits are, it’s time to start determining how to free yourself from them. By coming up with a plan, you are opening up energetic space around your habits so that you can deal with them in a useful way.
Obviously, there is no cookie cutter way to go about this as it depends on your situation. If you’re trying to be free of an addiction, it might require the help of a rehab facility, while if you are simply trying to drink more water, you could just use a smart water bottle.
It’s all relative and it all depends on the habits themselves and what you hope to achieve. The key is that you have a plan; otherwise, you are are likely to flounder.
Be Patient
Throughout all of this, it’s hugely important that you try to develop as much patience as you can along the way. Be compassionate with yourself and realize that it isn’t easy. It is likely to take time, so cut yourself a break (but don’t give up).
Final Thoughts
By bringing awareness, mindfulness, and a plan of action to your automatic habits, they will no longer be automatic. When we bring consciousness into these areas of our lives, we can begin to shift on so many levels. Enjoy the journey!
