What To Expect When You Start Working From Home

What To Expect When You Start Working From Home

INSIDE: When you’re thinking about working from home, there are some things you might not realize you need to consider. Get the tips here!

A lot of people are starting to turn towards working from home as a viable means of making a living.

There are so many jobs that can be done easily from your own home, and the pandemic has shown us just how true this is. Many of the companies who went virtual out of necessity during that time are keeping it that way because it works so well.

Things You Might Not Realize About Working From Home

If you haven’t started working from home yet, chances are you’re thinking about starting to work from home soon, but there are a few things you might want to bear in mind first.

Let’s look at what those things are, so you can be more prepared…

You Can’t Do Everything From Home

Although you might be starting to have dreams about doing all of your work from home, it might well be the case that you can’t quite do everything you want to from the comfort of your own home.

Some jobs just require a certain kind of area or space, or equipment that you don’t have in the home. Be aware of this from the get go so you don’t get disappointed. And keep in mind that sometimes, even jobs are advertised as remote require you to have a location.

You Need to Get Good at Routine

It usually doesn’t take very long to work out just how important it is to have a set routine when working from home. That routine might be flexible and change over time as your work demands change and so on, but the important point is that you have some kind of routine in the first place.

You should aim to develop a routine as early as possible, and learn to stick to it. That requires no small amount of self-discipline, but it’s essential if you’re going to succeed.

Claim Any Benefits You’re Entitled To

There are some circumstances in which you can claim benefits for having to work from home, so you should seek out that info to ensure you’re getting whatever you are entitled to.

Even if it is only a small amount it could help you to pay for the excess in energy costs and so on that you might incur. It can be surprising how much higher the electricity bill can get when you’re home all the time, so this is something to think about.

Soup Up Your Internet Connection

It’s highly unlikely (dare I say, impossible) to find a work-from-home job that allows you to work from home without using the internet. Pretty much every work from home job requires an internet connection at least some of the time, even if only to communicate with people occasionally.

If your connection isn’t consistent or if your internet is really slow, it might be time to upgrade.

Setting Up a Home Office Takes Time

You might already have an idea of where you’re going to set up an office in your home, but even if you do, you might be surprised with how long it can take to set it up.

At first, you might find yourself trying out different rooms around the house before you actually land on a spot that works, or you might set up an office and find that it doesn’t work because there is too much commotion going on. You never know what might derail your home office plans, so leave time for that.

The Clothes You Wear Matters

I’ll admit, I tend to wear the comfiest clothes I can find when I’m at home working, but I find that I feel better when I put some effort into how I look. When you wear the type of clothes you would normally wear at an office, it really does make a difference in how hard you work. L

Lounge clothes = laziness, while professional clothes = productivity. Plus, it’s much better when you need to jump on a last minute zoom call.

Being Organized Is Everything

The more organized you are, the easier it is to be productive and effective in your home office setting. The simplest way to make sure that you’re getting properly organized is to have enough space for storage.

Whether that means having a filing cabinet or a bulletin board, or any other useful storage options, get what you need to make your work life at home easier.

It’s Not All Rainbows & Sunshine

Working from home may sound like rainbows and sunshine, but it can actually be quite an adjustment, especially if you’re used to being around a lot of people.

Keep yourself “in the know” when it comes to how to improve mental health when working from home. That’s an important part of getting used to this way of life while taking care of yourself.

Breaks & Rest Are Essential

Before too long, it will become obvious that you still need to take regular breaks to allow your mind and body to rest. Just because you are working from home doesn’t mean you’ll be able to work for hours and hours without a break, or that you won’t get stressed and tired.

You need to continue to look after yourself with some self care, so that you don’t burn out. It will make a huge difference to how you feel about your work and your life in general.

Break Up the Scenery

Whether you are working at home every day or going out to a cafe once a week to shake up the routine, it’s all remote work. A change of environment can often prove very beneficial to your mental health. Don’t feel as though you have to stay at home the whole time.

And even when you are home, try moving to different areas of your house or outside to change up the scenery.

Final Thoughts

Working from home is definitely an adjustment. It can be a true blessing to be able to be home with your kids or throw in a load of laundry while you’re working, but it’s not without its challenges as well. Keep these tips in mind to get the best from it.
