7 Habits of Happy Moms

7 Habits of Happy Moms

INSIDE: It’s easy to burnout or even just feel anything but fulfilled as a mom. That’s why we put together these habits of happy moms. When you add these into your life, you’ll live a much more enriched and joyful life.

Being a mother is one of the most rewarding and taxing endeavors in life. Great moms tend to take responsibility for the happiness of their children, their partner, their parents…and anyone they care about.

This other-focused mentality, as beautiful as it is, often results in a serious neglect for their own needs. Neglecting ourselves inevitably leads to resentment.

And resentment leads to dissatisfaction, depression, anxiety, unhappiness, and so much more.

The good news is, there are moms out there who have figured out how to be nurturing to others while also having strong boundaries.

7 Habits of Happy Moms

Having strong boundaries results from a respect for yourself and your own needs. Every happy mom knows that they must secure their own oxygen mask before they can assist others.

If you have no gas in the tank, you’ll eventually have nothing left to give to those you love. Below, we’ll explore the 7 habits of happy moms.

Eating Right

We hate to hear it, but our diet choices really do impact our overall well-being. But, it doesn’t mean you have to become a vegan, baby-food-making, dehydrator enthusiast!

It simply means you need to take time to inform yourself on proper nutrition and begin making changes to your lifestyle, if necessary.

Have you heard of that mood-regulating neurotransmitter called serotonin? You probably know that it’s responsible for you feeling happy or sad, and consistent or erratic.

Did you also know that up to 90% of your body’s serotonin is produced in your gut? Crazy!

Our gut is a delicate ecosystem made of bacteria and yeasts, and a lack of balance between the good guys and bad guys can have devastating effects on our mood and psyche.

Making sure you consume enough fresh fruits, vegetables, and fermented foods (like sauerkraut, kimchi or keefer) is paramount to your health and wellness.

Moms often find themselves so busy that they forget to eat, end up starving, and scarfing down high-calorie, quick meals on the go.

Fried foods with heavy oils and little nutrition feed the bad guys in our gut and leave us nutritionally depleted, tired, and riding an emotional roller coaster.

Don’t fall into that trap! Make sure you keep enough grab-and-go healthy options on hand so you never have to blast through the drive through.

Exercising

No mom-shaming here. Just pointing out that exercise is vital for human beings! Happy moms know that even just 20 minutes of substantial exercise can make or break their ability to handle the stresses of their day.

Exercise is proven to release endorphins that reduce our perceived stress. It also helps us feel like we look good and are in control of our bodies and lives.

Instead of snapping at our kids (or our partner) because we’ve been neglecting our most basic needs, happy moms make sure to set aside time most days to move their bodies, break a sweat, and honor themselves.

Consider it free therapy! Your family will notice your great attitude and you’ll be setting a great example for your kids.

Date Nights

One of the things moms complain about is that they no longer have opportunities to feel sexy, romantic, or flirty.

They think back on the glory days before children, when afternoon naps and unscheduled love-making were the norm – when they were being courted by their partners, looked at lustfully, and when they felt desired.

Happy moms know that the primary partnership in the home must be a priority if the rest of the machine is going to keep running smoothly.

Motherhood does not have to mean an end to romance. Balance is paramount to fulfillment.

Find a few babysitters you trust and use them one night per week. Yes, every week!

Whether it’s a Thursday happy hour or a Saturday dinner, plan an evening with your partner every week. It’ll give you the opportunity to feel like a woman again, not just a mom.

Getting Dressed Daily

With the events of 2020, even non-moms have learned the sweatpants struggle.

When we are spending all of our time at home, cooking, cleaning, and working, it often feels pointless to get dressed or even wash our hair. But just like date night, getting dressed every day is a major part of a happy mom’s routine.

Taking the time to groom ourselves is the equivalent of honoring our temple.

Imagine walking into a place of worship and finding trash lying about. Most people would be shocked and confused.

Happy moms know that their body is their temple, and the image they project is a direct reflection of the respect and honor they have for that temple.

Take 10 minutes to pick out an outfit, throw on some earrings, and comb out that hair! Your mental health depends on it.

Spending Money on Themselves

This is a tough one! Most moms are sacrificial by nature, willing to forfeit their own desires for those of their children. As honorable as that sentiment is, it’s not fair or healthy in the long term.

You and your partner work hard for your money. You deserve to have nice things!

So go ahead, buy those shades made in Italy, splurge on those leather boots, or add a little bling to your jewelry collection.

It doesn’t make you a bad person or a bad parent. Just think of it as adding to the many beautiful items you’ll pass down to your children when you’re gone.

Spending Time with Friends

Your partner should not be your only friend. Nurturing your primary relationship is vital to a balanced life, but sustaining your friendships is critical for your sanity.

Having friends to lean on, celebrate with, and confide in, is wildly important to happy moms and it’s a great way to reduce stress. So prioritize your friendships!

Yes, it’s easy to leave old friendships on the backburner while you trudge through the first few years of your children’s lives.

While your kids are young, it seems nearly impossible to find the mental (or physical) energy to connect with anyone outside your immediate family. However, happy moms know that like exercise, a lunch with the girls takes some effort, but it’s just as satisfying once you’re done.

If you neglect your friendships too long, they won’t be there when you feel ready again. Your friendships are like your fitness – use it or lose it.

Asking for Help

Happy moms don’t try to be superhuman. Moms who try to do everything on their own end up burning out and setting themselves up for major issues down the road.

Do yourself a favor and ask for help when you need it

  • Let your partner cook even though they don’t make that dish exactly how you would.
  • Let your kids clean their bathroom even though it won’t be spotless.
  • Ask your mom to pick up the kids and take them to soccer practice. She wants to see them anyway.

Final Thoughts from Happy Moms

While reading this list, you probably scoffed at the idea of finding even 5 minutes to implement any new habits. If that’s you, go ahead and pick just one.

You’ll quickly find that taking time to honor yourself in one capacity will spill into all other areas of your life.

Exercising will give you more restful sleep and you may be able to wake earlier, adding time to your day.

Asking for help will free up some mental space to set a date with the girls. In the end, it all works together for your good, but only if you take the first step.
